The Initiation

Dhundiraj's father seated him on a rock and said, before going on his way

You must sit on this rock all day, without wandering away. Are you willing to do so? You will sit here and think about your home. You will sit here and recall the faces of all the people at home. Of your blood relatives only, not of friends and others. You will recall those faces and within your heart, try to connect with them. Alright? Come here once more tomorrow, and we will talk further.

Are you still missing home? Today's thought will go thus: Look yonder, where the mountain has met the sky. Look carefully at that sky and tell yourself this is the boundless. Beyond happiness or sorrow. The mountain is huge, but it is enclosed in lines, in a form. Think of your mind as the sky now, and of your thoughts as clouds perambulating in the sky. See it all like you have never seen it before and ask yourself, where are these thought-clouds coming from and where are they headed?

Two hands kneaded the dough, broke off a piece, rolled it into a ball, ran the rolling pin over it. She picked up the rolled out plate of dough and threw it into the air, her fingers catching and throwing it up again. She landed her little saucer of dough onto the griddle. The flame was shuddering in the earthen fireplace made of clay, throwing a light on mother's face. Drops of sweat shone on her skin like early morning dew reluctant to be woken by the day. Ma turned and looked and found that Dhundiraj had walked on his knees to the door where he was digging the earth by the door, to eat it.

She leaped up and picked him into her lap. She pushed a finger into his mouth and picked out the mud. Slapped him across his face, twice over, and dumped him on the ground. Dhundiraj howled. Dwarkabai: Cry all you want.

A thought struck her and she got up and found a torn bit of saree. She tore it further, and tied the two pieces onto her child's hands, making horses hooves of them.

"Go on, eat more mud, your hands are going to stay tied like this"

Lying in his cradle, the child looked one glance at Dwarkabai, and one at the sky. A single cloud in a sky. After a few seconds, as the cradle stopped rocking, the cloud also started moving, and came up, right over Dhundiraj. His crying stopped suddenly. He lay quietly in the cradle, a mute witness to an event that crossed the boundaries of the different worlds.

His pupils trembled and travelled towards his nose. Just then, a strange white swan settled near the cradle. He was made of a grey material. Meanwhile, she had covered the embers of the fireplace and was sitting, lost in thought, when the silence woke her up. Why had Dhundiraj's crying stopped so suddenly? She ran to the cradle with her heart in her mouth. Dhundiraj was like in a samadhi. His palm was half open like it was Tukaram's palm holding the kartal. The child had a unsettling smile on his face, but he made no sound and the cradle was still. As though that small piece of cloud in the sky held him/held had hypnotised him.

The sudden excitement in the atmosphere subsided, the air had movement again and started bearing that cloud away. The cloud had barely moved, the cradle started its rocking again. Dhundiraj came out of his trance. He cried out. Dwarkabai was relieved " I was so scared, forgive me! I will never tie your hands again".
