A young boy in Kerala sees a documentary about the central temple around which his town, Tiruvananthapuram is built..

the statue of vishnu is so large, rooms have come around, like film frames, around sections of it. so the head is enclosed in one room, the torso in the another and then the legs.

the boy has never seen the temple, it is for the very orthodox, but he sees the pieces of vishnu on pieces of film which flow together to make the one vishnu in his mind.

the statue's face is not too different from his, or of other little boys in the town- still eyes, fine nosed, with open lips like a tropical flower. their mothers' faces submerged in the emerging men's minds, like vishnu's face afloat in the sea where he reclines
