In the late 1930's, the Maharaja of Mysore, Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar, installed microphones in his durbar and attached loudspeakers to the outside of the palace. The purpose of these was to make the durbar concerts available to the general public

Tangibly different experience from listening to the concert in the durbar hall resplendent with mirrors which all reflected His Majesty's countenance.
