Phalke joins Kala Bhuvan photo studio as a teacher. Lectures: 1. Photography depends upon two basis operations- the formation of an image on a flat surface by an optical device and a chemical method of sensitising that surface to light source so that the image can be captured permanantly. The first requirement was met by camera obscura, knowing since the sixteenth century and used by artists as an aid to sketching. Wedgewood was th first to make a light sensitive material, when about 1800, he treated white leather and paper with silver salt. He made prints of leaves and transparent paintings.

The first permanant image produced directly by light was made by Nicepherone Niepce, in 1923, on a Bitumen coated pewter plate exposed for eight hours. In 1839, Daguerre demonstrated Daguerrotype in which silver surface of a copper plate was sensitised with iodine vapour.

2. Now Daguerre, when he took over Niepce's invention, was running Panorama theatre animated by light shows and movements in the Place du... The camera obscura had generated at one and the same time, painting, photography and the diorama. We know the original relationship between the theatre an the cult of the dead. The first actors separated themselves from the community by playing the roles of the dead. A figuration of the motionless and made up face beneath which we see the dead.

Since the light of the star which was daguerrotyped took twenty years to traverse the space seperating it from the earth, say which was fixed on the plate had consequently left the celestial sphere a long time before Daguerre had discovered the process by means of which we have just gained control of the light.

At one end of the spectrum, photographs are objective data, at the other end of the spectrum, they are stories of psychological science fictions.

photographed himself and having several photographer friends, was appalled by the onslaught of photography upon art: " The idolatorous mob demanded an idol worthy of itself and appropriate to its nature," he wrote. " Daguerre was [its] Messiah... Our squalid society rushed, Narcissus to a man, to gaze at its trivial image on a scrap of metal"
