Sayaji Rao meets Ravi Varma in Ooty and commissions fourteen paintings drawn from the epics to decorate the Durbar hall in the newly built Laxmi Vilas Palace

The meeting in the Nilgiris.. meeting with Gaekwad of Baroda arranged for probably by Dewan Tanjore Madhav Rao. The painting of Sita Bhoomipravesham has been shown to the Gaekwad. The Gaekwad commissions fourteen paintings..all from the Indian epics. And offers a handsome price of Fifty thousand rupees. These animated moments are painted between 1888 and 1890 of moral dilemma or of suffering, pleasure, rage, in the stories from the epics. Nala's self debasement through gambling and his desertion of Damayanti the temptation and seduction of the noble sage Vishvamitra. The departure of Urvashi from Purvuras.


To make this commission, the two brothers travel, all over India, observing clothes, ornamentation, draperies.. Ravi Varma decides to clothe his classical heroines in a saree.


Sound: He used a zinc disc covered with a thin layer of beeswax, the recording sound box was moved across the disc as it rotated. Then it was etched with choromic acid.
