1929 - V Shantaram, Keshavrao Ghaybar, Damle, Fattelal, have been disaapointed with the working of Maharashtra film company and after Damle's historic letter to Baburao Painter, they break away from Maharashtra film company and with the financial support of Sitarampant Kulkarni, set up Prabhat Film Company. Prabhat's first film, Gopalkrishna, is written by Bhalji Pendharkar, who has been working for Mumbai's Sharda film company. In 1926, Bhalji had worked with his elder brother Baburao Pendharkar on the film, Vande Mataram.

After Gopalakrishna, Prabhat makes Khuni Khanjir, Bajarbattu, Chandrasena and Udaykal. V Shantaram receive acclaim for his direction by this time. The first talkie, Alam Ara is made and has Kolhapur actor, Master Vitthal, in the lead. Master Vitthal, at that time, is called Indian Douglas Fairbanks, in the ads for Alam Ara.
