Shiva killed his megalomaniacal demon devotee- Tripurasura - and destroyed the three cities of the demons- Tripuri on this day. A festival to mark this day is celebrated on full moon day in the month of Kartik, on the first full moon after Deepawali. People bathe in the Ganga on this day.
