1848 Ravi Varma was born in a princely family of Kilimanoor linked closely with the ruling house of Travancore with its capital in Trivandrum, the ruling king, Ayilyam Thirunal. 1860's (a) Alagiri Naidu, Court Artist at Trivandrum. Raja Raja Varma, Ravi Varma's uncle,

                    studied rudiments of painting from him.

(b) Ramaswamy Naicker of Tanjore School, another Court painter of Travancore, adopts

     oil medium.

1860 Birth of C. Raja Raja Varma, Ravi Varma's brother and life-long assistant as a painter. 1862 Ravi Varma, now 14 was brought to Trivandrum to participate in the Princess's swayamvar but rejected. Ravi Varma's uncle realising his nephew's talents recommends to King Ayilyam to arrange for Ravi Varma to stay and study painting. 1866 Ravi Varma married to the sister of Maharani Lakshmibai of Travancore royal family. Allowed to use the title 'Koil Tampuran1 (as he is not a full Raja) which he has incribed on some paintings. 1868 Theodore Jensen, a portrait painter of Dutch origin, invited to the Trivandrum court. Ravi Varma merely allowed 'to see' Theodore Jensen at work. Ravi Varma continues his efforts to master oil painting technique. 1871 Famous speech of Lord Napier, Governor of Madras on 'The Fine Arts in India',

 setting out the agenda for developing a 'national painting' in India.

1870's (a) Ravi Varma refering to art magazines of Europe and England for sources of European painting. (b) Many portrait commissions. (c) Was presented the highest honour of Veerasringhala by the Travancore ruler for the portraits of the Maharaja and the Maharani.
