Only some places retain a special charge. The demons and the gods were exhausted. Time was being swallowed up, seasons passing as they continued pulling the mountain, Meru between them by a large green rope around it. They were trying to make a churn  of the mountain, to make the ocean yield up its treasures. The 'rope' was the giant snake Vasuki whose skin was red hot from the exertion, whose eyes bulged with veins so thick and red that the first Asura who held the head, never dared look down at what he was holding.

The sky was large over Trymbakeshvar. The town looked upto the Brahmagiri hills, which flowed over the sky like a watercolour stroke gone loose. In the small town stood an ancient stately temple of a soft black stone that turned dark in the rains. Its spires quietly remade the hills that it lived under.

Only some places retain a special charge the way Trymbakeshvar does.

All manners of gems were thrown up from the waters, into the skies.. Kamadhenu of the soft black lidded eyes, the cow that gave all, a white horse that could fly.. the sky was resplendent with her new constellations but for the gods, they were still searching for the elusive amruta, which once tasted, would keep the scythe of death away, forever. Still new to life, they had already experienced, in their battles, the ogre of death. They wanted to defeat him and play and fight eternally.

When the Amruta when it finally appeared, in the machinations, the fights, the interventions that were made to distribute it, a few drops fell. Trymbakeshwar was one of those places where the nectar of the gods did alchemy on the soil.

In a time when there was no plough, what did it take to have a greener field? What did Rishi Gautam do, he flung seeds on the ground like everyone else, how did his field specially prosper? On earth, Gautam was specially respected, but the gods grew jealous of his growing radiance.

They plotted and sent a hungry cow to his field. She went on rampage, eating his crop. Gautam saw her lumbering among the radiant crop, looking isolently at him, her jaws slowly making mulch of his farm.

He merely chased her with some straw flinging it on her, to chase her away, how did she die?

Gohatya is a crime with no easy penance. Gautam first prayed desperately to Shiva, his body still. Shiva knew his bhakta had to first bathe in the Ganga to do penance. Feeling tender towards Gautam, he asked Ganga to help him.

Ganga would not refuse the blue skinned god, whose wild hair she had once lived in. So she came to Trymbakeshavar as the Ganga-Godavari.

And then Shiva, charmed by the presence of two who loved him there, came to live at Trymbakeshwar.

The Indian Charivari appears. "The turbanned Mr. Punch of Calcutta smokes a hubble-bubble while being entertained by dusky maidens in scant clothing. The cover includes baby Punch being fed pale ale by an Indian nanny... Since wood engravers were in short supply the magazine had restored to lithography"
