Director: D.G. Phalke Release Year: 1917 Plot Indian film pioneer D.G. Phalke directs this adaptation of the popular and familiar epic Ramayana. The story centers around Rama whose wife, Seeta (Anna Salunke), is kidnapped by the treacherous Ravana, the demon lord of Lanka. Rama manages to enlist the help of his cohorts and an impish monkey god named Hanuman (Ganpat Shinde) to band together and defeat his evil, wife-stealing foe. This film exists only in fragments, but Phalke makes innovative use of crosscutting, long shots, and depth of field.
